Strike against Nepal federalism

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Protesting against federalism, a general strike was called by Rastriya Janamorcha on Sunday.

Public transportation was affected in the capital and a few vehicles were torched.

Rastriya Janamorcha chairman Chitra Bahadur K.C. said Nepal does not need a federal structure that "disintegrates" the nation. "Of course, centralised development should be broken but that does not mean federal system is the answer," he told The Hindu, adding: “Local bodies could be given self-ruling authority, while retaining the major authority to the central government.”

Federalism based on caste or geography would lead to religious and ethnic war in a culturally and religiously diverse country, he warned.

Nepal, which has five developmental regions, is a "Federal Democratic Republic" now, and the government has announced to form a State Restructuring Committee to implement federalism.
