“Memorial house well maintained”

Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi denies allegation relating to screening of film produced by Sun Pictures

CHENNAI: Refuting reports that Parithimar Kalaignar Memorial House at Vilachery in Madurai is in a state of neglect, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has said that it is well maintained.

Reacting to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s plans to organise a demonstration seeking proper maintenance of the house, he said photographs, information boards and other things in the memorial were in good shape.

“The Madurai District Collector, in his report, has said that the beams in the house made up of teak wood will not be affected by termites. Since the colour of Parithimar Kalaignar bust at the entrance of the house has faded, it is being refurbished,” the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said it was the DMK government that converted the house into a memorial in 2007 and installed a bust.

“I inaugurated the memorial and the government gave financial assistance to the family members of the Tamil scholar, who was the first to give a call for making Tamil a classical language,” he recalled.

As regards the resolution adopted at the farmers’ union conference, demanding agriculture loan at the rate of 4 per cent interest, the Chief Minister said an announcement had been made in the budget.

“Subsequently, an order was issued, and currently only 4 per cent interest is being charged for agriculture loans.”

Mr. Karunanidhi denied the allegation that the screening of the film produced by Sun Pictures was not allowed in theatres in Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts. “No theatre owner or distributor has complained that they were being threatened. If complaints are received the government will not remain silent,” he said.
