Forums submit memorandum to Southern Railway Line connects Tanur, Guruvayur and Edappally KOZHIKODE: Work on the coastal railway line connecting Tanur, Guruvayur and Edappally should be speeded up, demands a memorandum submitted by a few organisations to Southern Railway. The Federation of North Kerala Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Malabar Rail Users Association submitted the memorandum to Rakesh Chopra, General Manager, Southern Railways, in Chennai. The memorandum says the line will cut short the distance from Kozhikode to Thiruvananthapuram by 55 km and will be beneficial to Guruvayur pilgrims and tourists. The work should be entrusted to the Deputy Chief Engineer’s office here and completed on a war footing. The memorandum demands completion of the doubling of the Shornur-Mangalore line and electrification of the route. The tri-weekly Kannur-Yesvantpur (near Bangalore) train should be made a daily service and allotted a stop at Banaswadi (in Bangalore). The train should be extended to Bangalore city. The tri-weekly Chennai-Mangalore train should also be converted into a daily service. The memorandum demands extension of Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Jan Shathabdhi Express and the Mumbai-Mangalore Matsyagandha Express to Kozhikode. A Coimbatore-Mangalore inter-city express train should be started. More reserved and general coaches should be added to the express and passenger trains running through Malabar region in view of the heavy rush after the increase in bus fares. The memorandum says infrastructure and basic amenities in several railway stations in the region are inadequate and hence such facilities should be improved on priority. More ticket counters should be provided at important stations in the Malabar area. More local trains (push-pull trains), including from Shoranur to Kannur and Kannur to Ernakulam, should be started. Representatives of the Tanur-Guruvayur-Edappally Railway Action Committee and the All-India Malayali Association accompanied the team that submitted the memorandum.
