Nainavaram flyover to be named after Chanamolu

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday announced that the Nainavaram flyover under construction would be named after former MLA Chanamolu Venkata Rao following a request made by all the elected representatives of the district.

He announced this at the end of a public meeting at Makineni Basava Punnaiah Municipal Stadium in Ajit Singh Nagar, where he inaugurated a mega health camp conducted under Rajiv Arogyasri. At the end of his speech, Dr. Reddy’s attention was drawn by an agitating group of beneficiaries of Rajiv Gruhakalpa housing scheme, who wanted a firm assurance from him to their demand for immediate allotment of houses. The Chief Minister called one of their representatives on to the dais and explained that the construction of houses under Rajiv Gruhakalpa could not be taken up in the city owing to non-availability of land and the consequent non-provision of loans by banks. “But we have now decided to give houses to all of you under JNNURM. But, you will get them only after the houses under construction under JNNURM are allotted first to those living in objectionable encroachments and later to the hut-dwellers. You will be under third priority,” he said.

CPI(M) protest

Activists of the CPI (M), holding placards demanding house sites to all the eligible poor, tried to block the Chief Minister’s convoy near Pipula Road. Party leaders R. Raghu and Ch. Babu Rao, who fell down when the police prevented the agitated crowed from reaching nearer to the convoy, were allegedly dragged and other women protesters too were mercilessly beaten.

The party said in a statement that several of its activists sustained grievous injuries because of the “inhuman” treatment meted out to them by the “overzealous” policemen. It said that the activists wanted to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the police promised to allow five of them to submit the same. However, they later changed their stance and did not allow them to reach the convoy.
