MYSORE: Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Saturday tore Dasara hoardings that feature models, in protest against the “dilution of the sanctity of Dasara.” They removed banners and hoardings that showed models standing in front of the caparisoned elephants instead of the customary golden howdah carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari. The authorities had agreed to replace such hoardings with new ones, but the activists were impatient against the “delay.” The issue snowballed into a controversy as none of the paraphernalia associated with Mysore Dasara was depicted in the banners and hoardings. A hue and cry was raised over the issue following which the authorities decided to place orders for new hoardings depicting Dasara in all its traditional grandeur. The controversial logo that diluted the significance of Mysore Dasara has been removed, and the website that came under criticism for making a mockery of the living heritage of Mysore is being replaced by a new site. Deputy Commissioner Manivannan said the new logo depicting “Jamboo Savari,” and the hoardings had been printed and were in the process of being displayed.
