Traditional: Tourists were accorded a grand welcome at the city railway station to mark World Tourism Day on Saturday.

MYSORE: It was a pleasant surprise for the passengers of the Chennai-Mysore Cauvery Express when they were welcomed in a traditional manner at the city railway station on Saturday.

The occasion was World Tourism Day and in an effort to promote tourism and put Mysore on the international tourist circuit, the Department of Tourism and the Mysore Travel Agents’ Association (MTAA) celebrated the occasion by highlighting the concept of “Atithi Devobhava.”

They presented flowers and offered sweets to the passengers.

Folk artistes entertained the passengers by presenting music and dance programmes. The passengers were brought in a procession to the entrance of the railway station. They were also distributed brochures containing the list of Dasara programmes.

Assistant Director (Tourism) N. Jayaram, Station Master Venkatesu and MTAA president S.P. Shanthinath were among those present.

Mr. Shantinath said that connectivity played an important role in improving tourism.

Rail connectivity

“The rail connectivity between Mysore and Bangalore has boosted tourism and the double track between the cities will further enhance the city’s prospects as a preferred tourist destination,” Mr. Shantinath said.Considering the growth of Mysore, more reservation counters should be opened at the railway station to facilitate tourists. “Online ticket booking has come as a blessing for tourists,” he added.

Mr. Shantinath urged the railways to establish more booking counters and provide more facilities to commuters.

The MTAA said it would open tourist information centres at the railway station to provide information on tourist spots and Dasara programmes.
