Loyola College clinches football title

Coimbatore: Loyola College, Chennai, edged out city-mate Pachaiyappa’s College 5-4 (via tie-breaker) and emerged the football champion on the final day of the 16th Karunya Evangeline Memorial South India level tournament at the Karunya University campus here on Saturday.

Earlier, host Karunya University scored a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s Engineering College (Chennai) for the third place.

The results (League):

Men:

Volleyball: Sethu IT bt Karunya 25-19, 25-21, 27-25. Kabaddi: Presidency 24 bt Pachaiyappa’s 23, Gnanamoni College 18 bt Karunya University 7. Basketball: Dr. GRD CAS 78 bt Karunya 66. Football: Final: Loyola bt Pachaiyappa’s 5-4 (via tie-breaker). Third place: Karunya University 3 bt St. Joseph’s EC 0. League: Pachaiyappa’s 1 (Vinoba 55) bt Karunya 0, Loyola 4 (Zara 18, Dilip 34 & 51, Santhosh 69) bt St. Joseph’s EC 1 (Dexter 6).

Women:

Volleyball: Alphonsa bt PSGR Krishnammal 25-12, 25-16, 25-13. Kabbadi: EMG Yadhav 41 bt MOP Vaishnav 11. Basketball: St. Xavier’s 29 bt Sarah Tucker 13, MOP Vaishnav 58 bt PSGR Krishnammal 17.

Nirmala College prevails

Nirmala College for Women maintained a clean league slate to lift the title for the 18th year in succession in the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate ball badminton tournament at the Rathinam College premises recently.

Final standing:

1. Nirmala College, 2. Dr. NGP CAS, 3. Karuppanna Mariappan CAS, 4. Bharathiar University.

Cheran drubs Kongu Arts

Cheran Arts thrashed Kongu Arts 13-0 in a women’s league encounter in the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate hockey tournament at the Vidyasagar College of Arts and Science grounds in Udumalpet on Friday.

The results:

League: Men: PSG CAS 1 drew with GAC (Ooty) 1, Nandha CAS 1 bt VV College 0, PSG CAS 1 bt Nandha CAS 0, VV College 1 drew with GAC (Ooty) 1.

Women: Bharathiar University Dept. 0 drew with Kongu Arts 0, PKR Arts 1 drew with Cheran Arts 1, Cheran Arts 13 bt Kongu Arts 0, PKR Arts 1 bt Bharathiar University Dept. 0.

Chess tournament

The Indian Chess Academy, affiliated to the Coimbatore District Chess Association, will conduct a district level chess tournament for various age group categories at the Geetha Hall, opposite Coimbatore Railway junction, on September 28 at 9.30 a.m.

Sub-junior tennis

A district level sub-junior tennis tournament, organised by GPTC Tennis Coaching Centre, will be held at the Government Polytechnic College premises from October 3 to 5.

Salem district enters semifinals

Salem district qualified for the semifinal by virtue of its first innings lead against host Namakkal in the two-day TNCA inter-district under-19 cricket tournament at the SPB Colony grounds, Namakkal, on Friday.

After posting 228 in its first innings, Salem, thanks to a vital seven-wicket haul by Shanmuganathan (seven for 38), bundled out the opposition for 153. V. Saravanan (83) and R. Amit Singh (86) chipped in useful scores for Salem.

The scores:

Salem 228 in 77.4 overs (V. Saravanan 83, R. Amit Singh 86, Mohan Raj three for 55) & 38 for one in nine overs vs. Namakkal 153 in 64 overs (Saravanan 55, Shanmuganathan seven for 38). Salem gains first innings lead).
