Sakthivelu, Shyam post wins

VIJAYAWADA: Second seed S.K. Sakthivelu of Tamil Nadu defeated Sk. Karimullah of Andhra 25-19, 25-4, while third seed Shyam Sundar of Karnataka beat A. Srinivasa Rao of Andhra 25-2, 24-10 in the first round of the three-day South India invitational knock-out carrom tournament at Chilakaluripet on Friday.

The tournament features 48 players from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Andhra.

Meanwhile, Vijayawada’s K. Sujjan Kumar defeated Vizag’s A.A. Reddy 25-12. 25-6 in the men’s final of the second Andhra-ranking carrom tournament that concluded on Thursday.

CZ posts win

Central Zone defeated North Zone by seven wickets in the ACA under-19 women’s inter-zonal tournament at the IGMC Stadium on Thursday.

The scores: North Zone 81 in 37.1 overs lost to Central Zone 82 for three in 17.5 overs.

Match drawn

The match between North Zone and South Zone in the ACA under-14 inter-zonal tournament for the D. Venkateswara Rao Trophy ended in a draw at Anantapur on Friday.

The scores: North Zone 191 and 229 for nine in 78 overs (Sai Dinesh 51, Akhil 43, Dinesh 36, Bhima Rao three for 53, Srikrishna three for 48) drew with South Zone 230 and 98 for three in 23 overs.

Tulasi triumphs

SRR & CVR College swimmer M. Tulasi Chaitanya and Mani Manjari of Bapatla Engineering College emerged overall champions in the men’s and women’s segments of the Acharya Nagarjuna University inter-Collegiate swimming competitions that concluded on Thursday.

Tulasi created a new record in the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke events.

Seminar for PETs

The Krishna District Sports Authority will conduct a seminar for Physical Education Teachers from 50 mandals on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here.

The seminar will feature discussions on sports talent search scheme launched by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh in association with district education departments in identifying students from grassroots-level for admission into the sports schools, hostels and academies.

Pat for Tirumalai

The Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager, Vashista Johri, on Thursday congratulated Tirumalai Kumar for winning a gold and silver medal in the recently-concluded SAF Games for Physically Challenged at Chennai.

Tirumalai, who took part in the F57 category, won gold in discuss and silver in shot put.
