Varma, Sumanth shine

VISAKHAPATNAM: A.S.K. Varma 87 (12x4) and B. Sumanth 70 (9x4) added 136 for the fourth wicket after V. Manoj Sai 54 (10x4) and H. Vatekar 64 (9x4) were involved in a 100-run stand for the first wicket as Secretary’s XI made 360 for eight on the first day of the three-day ACA Ranji Trophy selection cricket match against President’s XI at the Port Stadium, here on Friday.

The scores: ACA Secretary’s XI 360 for eight in 90 overs (A.S.K. Varma 87, B. Sumanth 70, H. Vatekar 64, V. Manoj Sai 54, D. Kalyan Krishna four for 49) vs. ACA President’s XI.

Tulasi’s splendid show

K. Tulasi of Visakhapatnam put up a splendid show on her comeback trail from a back injury, to win the women’s above-75kg category in the all-India inter-SAI STC weightlifting championships at the Kalavani Auditorium in Nehru Place, here on Friday.

She lifted 80kg in snatch and 106kg in clean and jerk for a total of 186kg, which was 36kg more than the second placed lifter.

Syamlal of Calicut and Menati of Bangalore were declared the best lifters in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

The results:

Men: 77kg: 1. Gopal Krishna Das (snatch 100, clean and jerk 117, total 207), 2. D.V. Kiran Kumar, 3. Constantine. 85kg: 1. V. Raveendran (102 + 127 = 229), 2. Dharminder, 3. Md. Aneesh Asraf. 94kg: 1. Syamlal (130 + 180 = 310), 2. Tarunjit Singh, 3. Nitin. 105kg: 1. K. Ranjit (100 + 160 = 260), 2. Chikku Pulikkan. Above-105kg: 1. K.P. Mohammed Nishar (85 + 120 = 205).

Junior boys: 77kg: 1. M. Savad (106 + 140 = 246), 2. Th. Runjit Singh, 3. K. Nayak. 85kg: 1. Shen Singh (118 + 150 = 268), 2. Navneet Singh. 94kg: 1. Attinderjit Singh (115 + 127 = 242), 2. P. Junior girls: 75kg: 1. O. Geeta Devi (70 + 95 = 165). Above-75kg: 1. Binita Devi (70 + 85 = 155), 2. Lalchhandami, 3. Rubi Tomar.

Selection trials

Trials to select the Andhra University teams and inter-college meets in seven events will be held here from October 4, Director of Physical Education M. Syam Babu informed.

Students of affiliated colleges born on or after July 1, 1983 are eligible to appear for the trials or to participate in the inter-college tournaments.

They have to report at the venue at 8 a.m. along with the eligibility form and passport size photograph signed by their respective Principals.

For boxing competition, the colleges have to send their details entries to the organising secretary on or before October 15 and the weighing-in will be held at 9 a.m. on October 17.

The boxers have to come with all the boxing gear. A no-objection certificate from their parents and a physical fitness certificate from a doctor have to be produced.

Weighing-in for powerlifting (women) competition would be held at 9 a.m. on October 22.

Colleges have to send their detailed entry list to the organising secretary on or before Oct. 20.
