Troops ambush 7 suspected HuJI cadres in Assam

Guwahati: Seven suspected militants of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) were killed by Jat Regiment troops at Bashbari in lower Assam’s Dhubri district in the early hours of Friday. They were suspected to have crossed over the India-Bangladesh border on Thursday.

Arms, foreign currency, a radio set and three cellphones were recovered from their person, defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia, based at the Army’s 4 Corps headquarters at Tezpur, told The Hindu.

Among the arms were two pistols, a pen pistol, four revolvers, improvised explosive devices, two kg of RDX, three hand grenades, six detonators, 35-mm wire, 79 live cartridges and 14 empty cartridges.

The recovery of eight SIM cards of different telecom operators of Bangladesh, visiting cards of hotels and individuals in that country, soap with wrappers containing manufacturing details of a Bangladeshi company and bus tickets of the neighbouring country, led the troops to suspect that the slain men were from Bangladesh.
