Having a closer look: Police personnel inspecting the bomb that was found at Venkatapur village, near Dharwad, on Friday. HUBLI: It was almost 10.30 p.m. on Friday when all those who had gathered near the underpass on Pune-Bangalore National Highway near Venkatapur village in Dharwad taluk heaved a sigh of relief as a six-member bomb disposal squad, which arrived from Bangalore, defused the live bomb found there. Since 8.30 p.m., the time the squad reached the site (18 km from Dharwad) where the live bomb was found, the squad had been cautiously taking steps to defuse the bomb and it took it almost two hours to succeed in the highly technical job. And it was a relief indeed for all those who had gathered at the site, including the policemen. Soon after their arrival at the spot, they squad members realised that it was a high intensity bomb and they immediately took all precautionary steps before they began their work. Damage avertedInspector General of Police (Northern Range) Raghavendra Auradkar, who had been at the place since morning, told presspersons that it was a high intensity bomb which could have caused heavy damage if it had exploded. He said, “It was a combination of two pipe bombs and a LPG cylinder capable of causing high intensity explosion, which had been defused by the bomb disposal squad.” He said the search teams had found some wires and a truck jack in the vicinity of the spot where the bomb was found. He said combing operations would continue on Saturday. It was not clear for what purpose the truck jack and wires had been kept there, he said.
