HC orders imprisonment of former SP

Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy of High Court on Friday imposed punishment of two weeks of imprisonment on former S.P., Nizamabad district, Rajesh Kumar, and a Circle Inspector and sub-inspector in a contempt case.

In the month of April 2008, the police seized the cinema theatre Pavan Cinema in Nizamabad alleging that illegal screening of prohibited films was taking place.

Writ petition

The management filed a writ petition in the court complaining that the police can register a case but not put a seal on the theatre.

The court was informed by the advocate appearing for the police that the theatre is not under lock and key of police.

The judge permitted the management to take possession of the theatre but made it clear that the management has to face the action under Cinematography Act.

The police deposited the equipment of the theatre before the local court after this order of the High Court.

All this was reported in the media.

The management filed a contempt case alleging that false information was given to mislead the High Court.

Justice Nagarjuna Reddy called for the records and conducted inquiry and declared that the police officers committed contempt of court and interfered with administration of justice by not placing correct information before the court.

CI Lakshminarayana and sub-inspector S. Yadav were the other police officers who were given the punishment of two weeks’ imprisonment and fine of Rs. 2,000.
