SINGUR: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee threatened to resume agitation for the return of 400 acres of land any day, pointing out that she had only suspended and not withdrawn the agitation.

Addressing a rally to commemorate “Singur movement martyrs” here on Friday, Ms. Banerjee said, “We will withdraw the agitation only when the State government will make the agreement, reached between them and the Opposition on September 7 in the presence of the Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, operational.”

Even in the face of anxieties over a possible pullout by Tata Motors from West Bengal, she appeared steadfast on her demand for the return of land, which she alleged was “forcibly” taken away from farmers. She said, “We do not care whether Tata Motors stay or leave, if the farmers and sharecroppers are not given back their land and justice is done.”

Ms. Banerjee accused the State government for the present impasse for its “faulty land management policies and immoral attitude”, which according to her had created the situation in which Tata Motors was reconsidering the viability of the small car project here. She reiterated that the Opposition had always wanted agriculture and industry to flourish together and build Singur as a model for the entire country to follow.

“Tata Motors suspended work at the project site at their own will as we had never demanded them to do so and the agreement reached on September 7 had only mentioned the vendors to suspend work for a week,” she added. Ms. Banerjee said that a delegation will soon visit the President with an appeal to invoke either Article 356 or 355 in the State, considering the Left Front government’s failure in ensuring justice and peace in the State.
