PUDUCHERRY: BEML Bangalore edged ICF Chennai 2-1 to win the South Zone qualifying phase of the Federation Cup football tournament here on Friday. Notwithstanding the outcome both teams qualify from the zone for the next round of preliminary phase where the other zonal pairs and the I-league second division teams will join. Expectedly the major work for the Bangalore outfit came from the Nigerian recruits, though it took time before what seemed an even contest took a twist. Samuel Jackson got the breakthrough for BEML in the 31st minute making the most of a defence error after his colleague Gopinath had sent a long lob to the rival end. Even as goalkeeper John David launched for collection, Jackson ran it to nudge the ball in. ICF, however, had reason to be satisfied at half time for in the 43rd minute Ashok Kumar converted a penalty after he was brought down in the danger area by Obinn. The match seemed heading for a draw when ICF defender Kathik’s poor clearance brought Mohammed Khalendar to notch up the winning goal (87th minute).
