Karunya men on a roll

Coimbatore: Karunya University teams brought cheer to the home crowd by making it to the league stages in the basketball, volleyball and kabaddi events, in the 16th Karunya Evangeline memorial South India-level tournament at the Karunya campus here on Friday.

Its footballers signed off for the day on a merry note by defeating Nazareth College (Chennai) 5-0 for a place in the semifinal, with goals coming from Yesudasan, Rashid (three) and Richard.

The Karunya women, however, fell short of expectations, losing to Krishnammal College in the quarterfinal after surprising favourite Kongunadu College of Arts and Science enroute. Earlier, St. Joseph’s Engineering College (Chennai) scored a 25-16, 23-25, 17-15 win over Assumption College (Kerala) for a last four berth.

The results: Men: Volleyball: Sethu IT (Virudhunagar) bt St. Joseph’s (Chen) 25-17, 25-20; Karunya University (Cbe) bt Kongunadu CAS (Cbe) 25-22, 25-13.

Football: Karunya University (Cbe) 1 bt Sri Krishna EC (Cbe) 0; St. Joseph’s (Chen) 1 (Emmanuel) bt MCC (Chen) 0; Loyola (Chen) 3 (Pradic 2, Siva) bt Mar Athanasius (Ker) 0. Quarterfinal: Karunya University 5 bt Nazareth College (Chen) 0.

Kabaddi: Presidency College (Chen) 32 bt Loyola (Chen) 22.

Basketball: Karunya (Cbe) 78 bt Gandhigaram Rural University (Dindigul) 61; Dr. GRD CAS (Cbe) 59 bt Nehru Arts (Ker) 14.

Coimbatore advances

Host Coimbatore, by virtue of its first innings lead against Dindigul, entered the semifinals of the two-day TNCA under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the SNR Sons grounds on Friday.

After posting 248 in its first essay, the host, thanks to its spin combo of Aushik Srinivasan (four for 32) and Harish (four for 31) bundled out the visitor for paltry 130.

The Coimbatore batsmen, however, failed to come good in the second innings.

Mukil Azhagan (five for 31) had the host struggling for most part of the day.

But with Thirumurugan (42) and Nithish Kumar Sahaney (45) playing straight and safe, Coimbatore declared its innings at 158 for nine in 40 overs.

Mohammed Shoaib (four for two) replied strongly for the host with a four-wicket haul that saw Dindigul complete the day at 15 for four.

The scores: Quarterfinals: Coimbatore 248 & 158 for nine decl. in 40 overs (Thirumurugan 42, Nitish Kumar Sahaney, Mukil Azhagan five for 31) vs. Dindigul 130 in 35.5 overs (Aushil Srinivasan four for 32, Harish four for 31) & 15 for four (Mohammed Shoaib four for 2). Luck favours Vellore

At Vellore, Vellore entered the semifinals of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association under-19 inter-district cricket tournament, which concluded at the Thanthai Periyar E.V.R. Government Polytechnic ground here on Friday.

Its two-day quarterfinal encounter against Kancheepuram was drawn due to rains, and Vellore district was declared winner by spin of coin.

The scores: Kancheepuram 215 in 81.3 overs (Kevin Sukumar 51, S. Prabhu five for 61) drew with Vellore 130 for seven in 50 overs.

Innings win for City

At Chennai, D. Kamakshi and N. Niranjana starred as City registered an innings victory over Combined Districts on day two of the two-day women’s cricket match on Friday.

Kamakshi took four for 27 forcing Combined Districts, resuming on 40 for three in response to City’s 225 for seven declared, to follow on, before Niranjana scalped four for three in the second innings.

The scores: City 225 for seven decl. bt Combined Districts 102 in 66 overs (Vandana Shree 49, D. Kamakshi four for 27) and 28 in 26.3 overs (N. Niranjana four for three).

Tamil Nadu posts win

At Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu defeated Andhra Pradesh 31-21 in a men’s league encounter of the 30th South Zone National handball championship at SBIOA MHSS on Friday.

The results: League: Men: Tamil Nadu 31 (Subash 5, Sumit 5, Kunal 5) bt Andhra Pradesh 21 (Mohan Gandhi 9, Munwar 5); Karnataka 30 (Jibesh 7) bt Kerala 16 (Sunil 5).

Women: Andhra Pradesh 19 (Nagoorbee 8, Janaki 4) bt Tamil Nadu 11 (Kavitha 3, Malathi 3, Vaishnavi 3); Kerala 25 (Thanu Mathew 13) bt Karnataka 2.

Semifinalists spotted

Host Tiruchi, Delhi, Hyderabad and Gorakhpur entered the semifinals in the all-India RPSF inter-battalion basketball tournament on Friday.

The results: League: Hyderabad 33 bt Mumbai 9; Gorakhpur 34 bt New Jalpaiguri 7; Tiruchi 42 bt Jagadhari 8; Chittaranjan 24 bt Lucknow 17; Gorakhpur 50 bt Delhi 35; Delhi 29 bt New Jalpaiguri 14; Hyderabad 24 bt Jagadhari 17; Tiruchi 47 bt Mumbai 14; Delhi 61 bt Chittaranjan 15.
