Coimbatore: Karunya University teams brought cheer to the home crowd by making it to the league stages in the basketball, volleyball and kabaddi events, in the 16th Karunya Evangeline memorial South India-level tournament at the Karunya campus here on Friday. Its footballers signed off for the day on a merry note by defeating Nazareth College (Chennai) 5-0 for a place in the semifinal, with goals coming from Yesudasan, Rashid (three) and Richard. The Karunya women, however, fell short of expectations, losing to Krishnammal College in the quarterfinal after surprising favourite Kongunadu College of Arts and Science enroute. Earlier, St. Joseph’s Engineering College (Chennai) scored a 25-16, 23-25, 17-15 win over Assumption College (Kerala) for a last four berth. Coimbatore advancesHost Coimbatore, by virtue of its first innings lead against Dindigul, entered the semifinals of the two-day TNCA under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the SNR Sons grounds on Friday. After posting 248 in its first essay, the host, thanks to its spin combo of Aushik Srinivasan (four for 32) and Harish (four for 31) bundled out the visitor for paltry 130. The Coimbatore batsmen, however, failed to come good in the second innings. Mukil Azhagan (five for 31) had the host struggling for most part of the day. But with Thirumurugan (42) and Nithish Kumar Sahaney (45) playing straight and safe, Coimbatore declared its innings at 158 for nine in 40 overs. Mohammed Shoaib (four for two) replied strongly for the host with a four-wicket haul that saw Dindigul complete the day at 15 for four. Luck favours VelloreAt Vellore, Vellore entered the semifinals of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association under-19 inter-district cricket tournament, which concluded at the Thanthai Periyar E.V.R. Government Polytechnic ground here on Friday. Its two-day quarterfinal encounter against Kancheepuram was drawn due to rains, and Vellore district was declared winner by spin of coin. The scores: Kancheepuram 215 in 81.3 overs (Kevin Sukumar 51, S. Prabhu five for 61) drew with Vellore 130 for seven in 50 overs. Innings win for CityAt Chennai, D. Kamakshi and N. Niranjana starred as City registered an innings victory over Combined Districts on day two of the two-day women’s cricket match on Friday.
