KHAMMAM: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is toying with the idea of setting up a separate cell to monitor the implementation of welfare activities for contract labourers, according to J.V. Dattatreyulu, Director (operations). The company distributed coal miners provident fund slips to contract labourers at a function organised in the coal town of Kothagudem. Speaking on the occasion, he explained that some 12,000 contract labourers were engaged in the operations of the company in different areas. The provident fund facility was extended to the contract labourers in September last year. The contribution slips were handed over to the labourers on completion of the first year of their coverage. He said that some 2,400 contract labourer were working in the Civil Department of the company. A proposal was under active consideration for paying their wages through banks. They would also be considered for coverage under the ESI provisions. Payment of minimum wages was their right and it was ensured by the company. The SCCL management had been considerate so far as the welfare of the contract workers was concerned. The company had organised vocational training programmes for the contract labourers working in different section as a social responsibility.
