LTTE ‘radar point destroyed

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Air Force on Thursday claimed it launched a night-time air assault at an LTTE radar point located along the coast of Nagavanthurai, Poonaryn in the north, on Wednesday night at 10 pm.

It said the target was neutralised in the precision raid. On Thursday, jets pounded LTTE reinforcements in the Akkarayankulam area. Spokesperson Janaka Nanayakkara said the strike targeted an LTTE gathering north of Akkarayankulam Tank bund.

It is the first time in recent months the Air Force has talked about an LTTE radar point. It is immediately not clear if the radar was to monitor aerial or troop movements. The LTTE made no comment.

Ever since the LTTE first achieved aerial capability in March 2007, it has targeted the radar system gifted by India to Sri Lanka. Earlier this month, two Indian technicians attached to the Vavuniya Air Force Base were injured in an air and ground assault by the LTTE. Though the LTTEs target was the radar system, the military maintained the system suffered no damages.

Separately, the military said troops in Kilinochchi and Vavuniya battlefronts were further pushing towards Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) Road from Wanni.

The Defence Ministry said that troops of the 57th Division were edging closer to Kokavil and troops of Task Force 2 were heading towards Mankulam. It further said troops operating in the western half of Kilinochchi confronted LTTE cadre in the Nachchikudha area. Three soldiers were injured.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told the EU External Relations Commissioner in New York that Sri Lanka finds the procedure of instituting an investigation to determine whether or not EU should continue to extend concessions under the GSP+ process unnecessary and inappropriate, given the extensive cooperation Sri Lanka has extended to the UN/ILO convention supervisory bodies.

He made the remarks in the course of a meeting with Benita Ferrero Waldner, EU External Relations Commissioner, on Wednesday. There is great deal of concern in the nation on extension of GSP+ concessions as thousands of jobs of citizens, especially in the textile , are at stake. The current process will come up for review in October. There have been suggestions from some quarters in EU that the process is linked to human rights and humanitarian issues and should not be automatically renewed.
