Jayalalithaa refutes Karunanidhi’s charge

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Refuting Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s criticism that failure on the part of the AIADMK regime to increase power generation in the State had led to the present power crisis, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Thursday said the actual reasons were inefficiency, poor maintenance of thermal power stations and reduction in the State’s quota of coal and gas.

In a statement here, she said frequent breakdowns in thermal power stations at Ennore, Tuticorin, Mettur and north Chennai had caused a loss of 700 MW to 800 MW. In Mettur, one unit was not functioning for the last two months.

Claiming that Tamil Nadu’s share from the Central quota had been reduced by 1,000 MW, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was forced to buy coal from private companies as the Centre had also reduced the quota of coal.
