EMU train services hit

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: It was a providential escape for passengers of AM 10 Arakkonam-Moore Market Complex EMU train on Thursday, when the motorman overshot the signal at Pattabiram. He brought the EMU to a halt after passing a distance of 400 metres from the signal. For jumping the danger signal, the motorman has been suspended and a departmental enquiry ordered.

According to Chennai Divisional railway sources, the incident occurred at 9.05 am after the EMU left Pattabiram station. If the signal is red, it means clearance is given for another train on that particular stretch of the track. By jumping the danger signal, the motorman face the possibility of collision with another train. Realising his mistake, the motorman brought the EMU to halt but after passing a distance of 400 metres. As per safety rules, the motorman was placed under suspension.

Consequently, EMU services on the Arakkonam-MMC section were disrupted for 45 minutes and four EMUs which were coming behind were detained at wayside stations.

Earlier EMU services on the slow line between Avadi and Ambattur were disrupted for about two hours from 4.20 am on Thursday as the OHE wire gave away. One EMU was turned back at Villivakkam and two other services were operated on the fast line. Normal services were restored at 6.30 am, according to a source.
