ON Inspection: Assembly Petitions Committee Chairman Kovai Thangam, and other members enquiring about facilities in GH in Karur on Thursday. KARUR: Assembly Petitions Committee has recommended construction of a bridge across the Amaravathy river at Pasupathypalayam in Karur in lieu of the existing causeway there, according to its chairman and Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam. Addressing the media after a tour of some areas of the district and an interaction with officials regarding disposal of petitions received by the committee, Mr. Thangam said its other recommendations would be steps to prevent pollution of the Cauvery and the Amaravathy by effluents released by numerous dyeing units and supply of potable water to Thathampalayam and Thannasigoundanur as the water resources there have been affected by the effluents discharged from the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited from its Kagithapuram paper mill. Similarly, the panel would recommend renovation and upgradation of the Kattalai High Level Channel, Mr. Thangam said. The committee had received 213 petitions from public in Karur district of which already 166 had been disposed off through suitable recommendations. During Thursday’s discussions, 35 old petitions and 10 new submissions were taken up for deliberations, he said. Earlier, the panel comprising apart from Mr. Thangam, Balabaharathi (Dindigul) Selvi Ramajayam (Bhuvanagiri), T. Ramasamy (Srivilliputhur) and V. Kaveri (Edappadi) visited the Karur Government Hospital where they inspected the maternity ward and emergency ward before visiting the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Boys Hostel at Thanthonrimalai. While the GH authorities had given new dresses to the inmates for wearing on the occasion of the panel visit, the MLAs found none at the Emergency Ward. At the boys’ hostel too the team encountered no students and the surprised members were told that the boys had gone off for special class. District Collector T.N. Venkatesh, MLAs V. Senthil Balaji (Karur), R. Manikkam (Kulithalai), P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram) and M.A. Khaleelur Rahman (Aravakurichi), Under Secretary Singaravelu, District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar and other officials participated in the deliberations.
