Awareness: District Environmental Officer R. Lakshmi, giving away a prize to a student at Government Arts College for Women in Pudukottai. PUDUKOTTAI: The students of the Government Arts College for Women were sensitised to the nuances of bio-farming during the two-day seminar and awareness programme on ‘natural farming’ organised jointly by the Botany Department of the College and the Centre for Human Rights and Development Trust, a NGO, recently. The programme was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai and the National Council for Science and Technology, New Delhi. The Principal, D. Bhooma said the natural farming had assumed a greater importance. The constant use of Chemical fertilizers for decades together had degraded the fertility and texture of the soil. Many a farmer were spontaneously taking to bio-farming techniques. However a lot more is needed to be done.The Agricultural Officer, Jagedeswari, one of the resource persons spoke on the efficacy of vermin-compost and coir compost. An organic farmer, G. S. Dhanapathi outlined the changing practices in cultivation norms and cropping pattern in the last four decades. The Editor, Research Journal of Biological Sciences, J. J. College of Arts and Science, S. Palaniappan who spoke on ‘agro-biodiversity’ explained the advantages of integrated farming and weed management. The District Forest Officer, A. Somasundaram planted saplings to mark the inauguration of an exhibition. The District Environmental Officer, R. Lakshmi delivered the valedictory address. She specifically referred to the urgent need for taking up afforestation programme. Students should play a constructive role in this direction. The Head of the Department of Botany of the college, N. Komalavalli offered felicitations. Mrs. Lakshmi gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions held in connection with the awareness programme.
