‘Valaikappu’ programme for pregnant women launched

NAMAKKAL: Health department conducted a ‘Valaikappu’ programme for pregnant women at the primary health centre located in Venkarai village in the district recently.
Awareness
Thirty-five women in the advanced stage of pregnancy participated in the programme.
Their faces lit with hope, when the officials carried out the conventional ‘valaikappu’ rituals by offering bangles to them.
Health officials said that the programme was primarily organised to create awareness among pregnant women about pre-natal and post-natal care.
Appeal
The officials advised the participants to take healthy food during their pregnancy.
They appealed to the villagers to take maximum advantage of the health-care delivery programmes being implemented by the Central and State governments.
The free meal scheme for pregnant women was also launched during the programme.
Assistance
Twelve pregnant women were given a sum of Rs. 72,000 as assistance under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.
Venkarai Town Panchayat Chairperson Dr. Amutha Nedunchezhian presided.
Medical Officers Ranganathan and Velusamy and senior officials were present during the programme.
