Hold BBMP poll, Government urged

Special Correspondent

City has been without Mayor for two years

‘CVS of property tax has been not implemented’

People are not able to sell or buy land: former Mayor

BANGALORE: The former Mayor of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) P.R. Ramesh has appealed to the Government to immediately hold elections to the BBMP Council and constitute the Bangalore Metropolitan Committee as resolved by the State Government 13 years ago.

Problems

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Ramesh said that a city such as Bangalore with multiple problems had been without a Mayor and an elected body for nearly two years.

He said that the city had not had an elected council since November 2006.

According to the Karnataka Municipal Act 503B and the 74th amendment to the Article 243ZE the Government should constitute the Bangalore Metropolitan Committee and all the development work should be taken through the committee, Mr. Ramesh said.

But the Government had not taken any action to either hold elections or to constitute the committee, the former Mayor said.

Mr. Ramesh said that the Capital Value System of property tax had been not implemented despite the system being in place for implementation for last six months.

In a fix

The property owners in the city were in a fix as they were unable to pay the tax for the last six months, he said.

This was affecting the tax collection of the corporation and all development works were held back for want of funds, he said.

The people were not able to sell or buy land as the tax receipt was not available for land transaction, Mr. Ramesh said.
