A CLOSE CALL: The mosque at Padarayanapura where the parapet caved in early on Wednesday.

BANGALORE: Three persons who were a part of Ramzan related programmes sustained injuries when the parapet of the Padarayanapura mosque collapsed early on Wednesday. Among them, the condition of Iliyas, a resident of ninth cross in Padarayanapura, has been admitted to NIMHANS and was said to be critical.

The incident took place around 4 a.m. when at least 1,800 persons, mostly residents of Jagajivan Ram Nagar and Padarayanapura, had gathered at the mosque. The police said that a huge crowd had gathered on the terrace of the mosque and about 50 persons were leaning on a parapet that was under construction. Unable to bear the weight, the parapet collapsed and nearly 35 persons fell from the mosque terrace leaving three persons injured, the mosque authorities told The Hindu.

“We immediately informed Jagajivan Ram Nagar police who shifted the injured to the hospitals,” said Syed Sibkhat Ulla Hussain, owner of a vulcanising shop on H. Siddaiah Road.
