2 groups claim leadership in association “Takeover amounts to contempt of court” Chennai: The rift in the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association (TNBA) came out in the open on Wednesday when one group of members took charge of the Jayalalitha Indoor Basketball Stadium in Kilpauk stating that it had the authority to do so. The indoor stadium, which has not been used for a few months, had been a centre of controversy with two groups of people claiming leadership in the association. Both groups had gone to court on the matter. D. Napolean, actor and former basketball player, said that he was elected Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association by 250 associations in the State. However, A.N. Dyaneswaran, founding chairperson, said he continued to be the chairman and chief patron. The Madras High Court injunction on the possession of the stadium was still applicable and the sudden takeover of the facility would amount to contempt of court. He also said that a case on the use of the TNBA name and logo was still pending in court. Mr. Napolean said a court order in a separate case had given them the authority to carry out the activities of the TNBA. He said district associations’ members would meet in the city on Thursday to discuss how basketball could be promoted.
