Five translators conferred Anuvada Sahitya Academy fellowships

Bangalore: The Karnataka Anuvada Sahitya Academy has conferred its annual (2008-09) honorary fellowships on N. Rangnatha Sharma, V. Nagaraja Rao, Mahir Mansur, H.S. Parvathi and D.S. Chougle, in recognition of their significant contributions to Kannada literature through translations.

The academy has also selected five translators, D.A. Shankar, M.R. Kamala, S. Raghunath, H.D. Shantha and D.N. Srinath for its annual book prize for 2007.

The fellowships and book prizes carry a cash prize of Rs. 10, 000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively, besides a memento, citation and shawl.

The academy Chairman Pradhan Gurudatt told presspersons here on Wednesday that Mr. Sharma was an acclaimed scholar. His efforts in bringing out the Kannada version of the Valmiki Ramayan have been invaluable, he added. Mr. Rao, a former editor in Akashavani Bangalore, has translated many novels of Thomas Hardy and several plays of Euripides into Kannada. He has translated several chapters of Will Durant’s “Story of Civilisation” into Kannada. He has also translated for over 5, 000 pages into Kannada for the State Legislature.

Dr. Parvathi, a former official in Akashavani Bangalore, has translated major national plays from Hindi and other languages into Kannada.

A big name in Urdu literature, Prof. Mansur, has translated the Central Sahitya Akademi award winning books on Sarvajna and Purnadara Dasa, the late Shivarama Karanth’s novel Chomana Dudi and Chandrashekhara Kambar’s Siri Sampige play into Kannada. He has also translated the vachanas of Sri Basaveshwara, Akka Mahadevi and Allama Prabhu into Urdu.

He has introduced major Kannada writers such as the late Kuvempu, Da.Ra. Bendre, Pu.Ti. Na., Gopalakrishna Adiga, Alanahalli Krishna, Ramachnadra Sharma, Sumatindra Nadig, Devanura Mahadeva and Viadehi to Urdu readers.

Acting as a bridge between Kannada and Marathi literature and theatre, Dr. Chougle has translated several Marathi works, including “Gandhi vs Gandhi,” “Gandhi-Ambedkar,” “ Neralugalu,” “Paying Guest” and “Ninnamele Sittilla” into Kannada.
