Heated debate over fevers, NREGP

ZP takes serious view of regular absence of officials at meetings

Some 122 workers not paid for work done in May

Six suspected dengue cases reported

VIZIANAGARAM: The Zilla Parishad general body, which met on Wednesday, witnessed heated debate on the “inaction” of medical and health official on dengue, malaria and gastroenteritis cases, delay in payment of wages to workers engaged under the NREGP and the regular absence of officials at mandal parishad meetings.

While the officials were discussing crop loss due to heavy rains, beneficiaries under NREGP from Mirtivalasa village in Pachipenta mandal staged a dharna at the entrance of the ZP conference hall forcing MLAs, ZPTCs and MPPs to discuss their demand. Pachipenta MPP Prasad (TDP) informed Chairperson B. Appala Naidu that some 122 workers who had worked for 21 days in May have not been paid wages and demanded action against the officials concerned. Taking a serious view of the problem, Chairperson and in-charge Joint Collector P.A. Sobha informed the workers that the payment was delayed due to a technical problem and it would be settled in three or four days.

Medical camps

With regard to reported cases of dengue, District Medical and Health Officer Ch. Mahesh said that six suspected cases of dengue were reported at private nursing homes in Bobbili area. The department was also conducting medical camps to control malaria and viral fevers in the agency. Not satisfied with the reply, CPI (M) MLA Kolaka Lakshmana Murty said that not a single camp was conducted in his Naguru (ST) constituency and there were no doctors in two of the PHCs. Congress MLA from Salur P. Rajanna Dora said that he requested the RJD three months ago to appoint a staff nurse at Pachipenta PHC but the official “closed the file” without any action.

He recalled that several people had died of mysterious fevers in the same mandal last year.

Lok Sabha member Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi suggested permanent measures like maintenance of sanitation, supply of protected water and use of mosquito curtains to check fevers.

On a complaint to the Chairperson that no official was attending mandal parishad meetings , the meeting adopted a resolution that action would be taken against such officials .
