Newspaper receives ‘terror threat’ mail

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A letter sent by mail and signed by “Indian Mujahiddin” threatening eleven blasts in different parts of the city between September 22 and 26 was received by a local Bengali newspaper office here on Tuesday.

The letter, a computer printout, claimed that the outfit had succeeded in carrying out blasts in New Delhi and now it was the turn of Kolkata.

The blasts would occur in the city airport, hotels on Park Street and government and private hospitals, it said.

Commissioner of the city police Gautam Chakravarty, said that the letter was a “practical joke” going by the language. Neither did the police believe that those responsible for it were members of the militant outfit.

But there was no reason for complacence and there was need to be alert. The city, like others in the country, could be a target of terrorists. Moreover, the festive season was round the corner, he said.
