Corrections and clarifications

* * A sentence in the eighth paragraph of a report “2 terrorists shot dead in Delhi” (September 20, 2008, page 1) was “… He [Mohammad Bashir alias Atiq] went to Jaipur on July 13 to trigger blasts there, the [Delhi] police said.” The Jaipur blasts were on May 13.

* * A zero too many! In connection with a Madurai report “‘Left struggle insulated economy from global crisis’” (September 21, 2008), Ms. Brinda Karat, Member, Polit Bureau, CPI(M), clarifies that she had said that hedge funds in oil had increased four times in just four years, and not 400 times as reported. Also, the daily volume of international foreign exchange trade was 80 times more than the trade in goods and services. Even the U.S. had put controls on futures trade. This got incorrectly reported as the U.S. putting a ban on 800 items. (The report was on Ms. Karat inaugurating the four-day, 30th general conference of the South Zone Insurance Employees Federation.)

* * A PTI item “Czech envoy among 53 killed in Pakistan” (“Briefly”, September 22, 2008, page 1) said the bomb attack in Pakistan used 6 kg of RDX, while an inside report “All roads lead to FATA: Pakistan”, by the Pakistan Correspondent (“International” page, September 22, 2008), gave the figure as 600kg of TNT and RDX. The figure 600 kg is right.

* * A report “Favourite picks from bookshelves” (Chennai city, September 20, 2008, page 2) incorrectly mentioned Chetan Bhagat’s first novel to be “One Night at a Call Centre”. It is “Five Point Someone” (2004). The title of his second novel is “One Night @ the Call Centre” (2005), and not “… at a Call Centre”, as published. The report also gave the title of his latest novel as “The Three Mistakes”. It is “The 3 Mistakes of My Life” (2008).

* * A PTI item “Umpire Robinson steps down” (“Snapshots – Sport”, September 19, 2008) said Zimbabwe umpire Ian Robinson has stepped down from ICC’s elite panel to take up the new job of ICC Regional Umpires’ Performance Manager for Africa region. It was an error. Robinson is an International panel umpire.
