Phagwara (Punjab): He claims to have been walking for 21 years to spread the value of “inner power and universal goodness” among the youth and working professionals. Inder Mohan Gupta (50), an M. Phil in Hindi from Aligarh Muslim University, claimed he has so far covered 43,086 kms on foot and crossed 12 states in his quest to spread the message of peace and love among people. Calling himself a “pedestrian missionary” Mr. Gupta said he was doing his Ph. D when he felt the inner desire to begin his walking mission. “In the last 21 years, I have walked through 12 states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Haryana and I am presently in Punjab,” he said. “Kapurthala district is the 210th district of the country which I had entered on Tuesday after spending a night in Nawanshahr district,” he said. He usually spends the night in gurdwaras or temples. Mr. Gupta said he meets his family members regularly in Bharatpuri, Ram Nagar, Nainital, Uttarakhand. “But whenever I break my walking to go back to my family by train or other transport, I resume my walking from the very place I had left walking,” he said. He said that with his heavy haversack on his back, he walked about 20 kms or more in a day. “Since Punjab has great density of population and much congestion, my walking distance gets reduced and I had to rest after walking less than twenty kms,” he said. - PTI
