Man held on charges of rape, murder

Staff Reporter

CHANDIGARH: A 45-year-old man has been arrested on charges of raping and murdering a 10-year-old girl in Phillaur, 20 km from Ludhiana. Madan Lal, father of five children, was arrested by the railway police after his neighbour complained to the Punjab police that his daughter was missing. The neighbour told the police that Lal came to his house here on Sunday night while he was away and tried to rape his wife but she freed herself and ran from the house to get help. When she and others came back, they discovered that Lal was not there and her daughter was missing too. The minor girl was sleeping with two other siblings when Lal picked her up and took her away.

According to the police, Lal confessed during his interrogation that he had raped the minor girl and later strangled her to death near a railway track .
