Coimbatore: In order to ease pressure and crowd at the Transport Department offices, the State Government has decided to rope in the services of post offices to collect fee and tax where the physical presence of the vehicles or its owners was not required.

The Deputy Transport Commissioner, T. Gunasekaran, told The Hindu that in Coimbatore district the facility would be launched in 73 post offices and the job of training the postal staff towards the e-payment project had already begun.

According to him, after payment of the fee the applicant might have to visit the RTO in some cases.

The pressure on RTO staff would come down considerably, he said. Fee for renewal, issue of duplicate conductors licence, making change of address in conductors licence, effecting transfer of ownership/address change in registration certificate, making endorsement/termination of hire purchase agreement in registration certificates, grant of renewal of all kind of permits except stage carriages and omni buses, granting and renewal of all kinds of permits except stage carriages and omni buses, the issue of duplicate permits (for all classes) and change of addresses, replacement of permits, etc can be paid at post offices.

Old vehicles

Annual tax in respect of old two-wheelers (registered before July 1, 1989) and old four-wheelers non-transport vehicles (registered before July 1, 1998) too be paid at post offices besides tax of transport vehicles except stage carriages and omni buses and green tax for transport and non-transport vehicles. Printed pay-in-slips for e-payment would be made available in post offices authorised to collect taxes and fee. People can make payment by cash or demand draft along with the filled pay-in-slip in triplicate.

After the payment, the applicant should approach the RTO for the required service. RTOs should ensure that compounding fee list of file number and vehicle number should be made available to the postal authorities well in advance before the beginning of each quarter.
