‘Don’t overburden Central forces’

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Monday chaired a meeting of police chiefs of some States, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Kerala to discuss measures to strengthen the intelligence gathering machinery in their States.
Mr. Patil stressed that special branches of all State police departments should be strengthened.
He said the tendency to fall back upon Central forces at all times should be kept in check as only a limited number of Central para-military forces was available. The meeting was also attended by Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and Intelligence Bureau Director P.C. Haldar.
The Home Ministry warned the Karnataka government last week that violence against the minority Christian community was a breach of constitutional provisions and the law of the land.
In a report, the State government apprised the Home Ministry of the steps it had taken over the past few days to control the situation — including detention of a Bajrang Dal leader from the State and action against some government officials.
