COIMBATORE: Job-working powerloom units in the district, which resumed operations on August 29 after a 13-day strike for higher wages, have started regular production and are getting the revised weaving charges. P. Kumarasamy, secretary of the Coimbatore District job-working powerloom units’ association, told The Hindu that the textile manufacturers agreed to pay the revised rates (32 per cent more for the Somanur variety fabric and 27 per cent higher for the other varieties) from September 15. Most of the job working units collected the weaving charges on a weekly-basis from the textile manufacturers. The demand for fabric was picking up and with the units operating two shifts a day (12 hours each), several manufacturers started disbursing the revised charges last week in Somanur. Mr. Kumarasamy expressed hope that the revised wages would be implemented for the job-working units in Palladam and Avinashi too this week. However, there was some problem regarding a variety made by the units in Avinashi and this would be sorted out, he said. What was of concern now to the units was the frequent power cuts affecting production, he said.
