Saif identifies supply point in Manipal

Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI: Saif Ahmad, arrested following an encounter with suspected militants at Batla House in South Delhi last week, was taken to Manipal in Karnataka on Sunday to identify those who supplied the explosives and detonators used in the bombs set off here on September 13.

Saif has reportedly given some definite leads about the people who handed over the raw material to him for manufacturing the improvised explosive devices. The information has been shared with the Karnataka police who are now working on it and expecting a “quick breakthrough.”

After identifying the place where he had received the consignment, Saif was brought back to the capital on Monday night.

Investigations into the modus operandi of the alleged Indian Mujahideen head Mohammad Bashir alias Atif has revealed that he desperately wanted to get worldwide publicity for the blasts masterminded by him. During interrogation, the arrested suspected militants told the police that Bashir would insist on carrying out operations frequently. He allegedly used to work on the contents of the e-mails sent to media groups owning up the blasts. With each blast, he allegedly made “improvements” in the contents and also developed a logo for the outfit.

The police have also found contact numbers of the London-based offices of foreign media groups like the BBC and the CNN stored in his mobile phone, suggesting he had plans to get maximum possible publicity from the blasts. They suspect he could also have links abroad.
