Sensex closes below 14000

MUMBAI: After a strong opening, the markets closed weak with the Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index (Sensex) losing a little over 47 points to close below the 14000-level on selling across sectors, except metal and FMCG counters.

Cutting short the gaining trend of the past two days, the Sensex closed lower at 13994.96, a loss of 47.36 points against last Friday’s close of 14042.32.

While most of the sectoral indices ended in the red, capital goods index (2.24 per cent) was the biggest loser followed by power index (1.62 per cent).

Rupee gains

The rupee gained by 38 paise against the dollar at 45.44/45 on Monday on sustained selling of the greenback by banks in spite of mixed trend in crude oil prices. In fairly active trading at the inter-bank foreign exchange market, the rupee resumed strong at 45.56/57 against the last weekend close of 45.82/83. — PTI
