VOICING PROTEST: Students residing in a hostel stage a road roko at Nandanam on Sunday night.
Chennai: Chaos reigned on Chamiers Road near the Nandanam signal when students residing in the Adi Dravidar government hostel nearby blocked traffic late on Sunday night.
About 300 students took to the road in support of their hostel mates who were allegedly assaulted by some employees of a restaurant in the locality. The tension was sparked by an altercation between a group of students and the restaurant employees about the food served.
“We often eat out because the hostel food is bad,” a student said.
The verbal duel turned violent when more students joined and began to smash the restaurant furniture. The restaurant owner’s car and two motorbikes parked nearby were also damaged. Two students were injured and hospitalised. Some employees of the restaurant were also injured.
The students blocked traffic, demanding action against the restaurant-owner.
Police personnel arrived in large numbers to control the crowd and divert traffic.
