The Metropolitan Transport Corporation is well aware of the heavy passenger traffic from the Hastinapuram bus terminus to various places in the city and beyond. Especially now, after the introduction of bus services to far-off destinations such as Chengalput, Kundrathur, the terminus is in dire need of improvements to mitigate the hardships of commuters. The condition prevailing in and around the terminus beggars description. It is high time that the government took urgent steps to renovate the terminus. While the government spends crores of rupees to ply buses from Hastinapuram, why should it avoid spending a few lakhs to make the terminus passenger-friendly? K. V. Sivaswamy, Bhuvaneswari Nagar Pedestrian spaceThe Avadi-Tiruvallur and Poonamallee High Roads starting from the bus stand have been widened much to the inconvenience of pedestrians as no space has been left out on both sides for easy passage. This has rather become a parking slot for lorries, trucks, vans and autorickshaws. The volume of traffic through these high roads is comparatively high day and night. The Highways Department is earnestly requested to pave the way for pedestrians immediately. N.B.S. Manian Manavalanagar Unwarranted power cutThis has reference to the story on TNEB power interruption (The Hindu, 15-9-2008). We, the power consumers in Ayanavaram, have been the worst affected by the frequent power cuts for more than two years now. The need of the hour is to initiate action for installation of new transformers and replace the worn-out underground cables, besides maintaining adequate staff strength and infrastructure to carry out or attend to the repairs on time. Moreover, the four-km-long Ainsley canal in Ayanavaram has been a picture of neglect. The canal has been connecting sewer lines from residences in wards 63, 55, 57 and 53 of Chennai Corporation and is being treated as a dumping yard for all sorts of wastes including the debris generated from demolished structures. If Corporation and Metrowater authorities plan a joint study, the remedy is not far off to sort out the utter pollution of the area. K. Ramadoss Ayanavaram Ration card for LPGIt is a matter of great relief that production of “ration card” is not to be insisted on for LPG connections or refill supply as there are thousands of genuine LPG consumers without ration cards. It is difficult to get a new ration card whenever we shift residence to a new place on transfer, etc. The national companies may kindly include the following documents also as proof of identity/ residence, etc.: Bank passbook with current address/entries in it; identity card by Postal Department recently introduced. K. Raghavendran, Madipakkam Retiring roomsRetiring rooms/dormitories are available at 59 stations of Southern Railway. I request the authorities to provide this amenity at Tiruninravur, Tiruvallur and Tiruttani for passenger’s convenience. S.V.S. Iyer, Tiruninravur Chromepet bus standPallavaram Municipality has constructed a beautiful mofussil bus stand for the convenience of suburban passengers. The bus stand has been provided even with seating facilities. This was opened by Labour Minister T. M. Anbarasan a month ago. Though the public have started using the bus stand from the second day of its opening, mofussil buses do not stop at the bus stand. The buses stop in the middle of the carriage way of GST Road and passengers are forced to dot across the dangerous road to catch buses at a great risks. Therefore, we appeal to the authorities to ensure that all mofussil buses stop only at the bay and not at the carriage way. V. Santhanam Chromepet All set for monsoonIt was good news (The Hindu September 15) that the Chennai Corporation held a meeting to chalk out a monsoon-prepared plan. Necessarily, the plan would include prevention of stagnation of water and flooding of areas. For this the first and foremost action should be to attend to the existing stormwater drainage system. In south Chennai the Mambalam canal originating from G. N. Chetty Road carries rainwater from T. Nagar and other areas over its long course and drains it into the Adyar river. Now this canal is full of rubbish and weeds and so even a small volume of rainwater cannot flow freely. I, therefore, request the Corporation to take up the cleaning and desilting of this canal on priority. R. Sundaresan, West C.I.T. Nagar Open stormwater drainThanks to the State Highways Department, re-laying of Thirumangalam-Ambattur Ind. Estate road has already started from Golden Colony side. The work is also being carried out at night to minimise the inconvenience to the public. But the open stormwater drain on both sides of this road has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and is posing a great health hazard to the residents living nearly for many years. Moreover, the open drain poses a great danger to the lives of the pedestrians, especially thousands of schoolchildren studying in the surrounding areas. Several representations to the Ambattur municipality have yielded no result as this drain is supposed to be maintained by the Highway Department. On behalf of the general public, I request the Highways Department to desilt and repair the drain on war-footing and also arrange for RCC cover slabs to ensure a free flow of rainwater. V. Rajagopal, Anna Nagar West Extn.
