A new initiative: School building under construction for Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalaya with the finished elevated model at Arasakuppam Panchayat in Denkanikottai Taluk in Krishnagiri District. Krishnagiri: The efforts of Social Welfare Organisation for Rural Development, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) working towards enrolling school dropouts, have started bearing fruit. In Krishnagiri the NGO started Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) under the guidance of district Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme (SSA) Chief Education Officer P. Semalai. Child labourersIt enrolled 250 child labourers and girls, aged between 11 and 14, in these schools. Students have been enrolled in Standards VI to VIII. Regular examinations are held in these schools. There are three schools running under this scheme. Schools with a student strength of 100 are categorised as A and those with 50 B.A KGBV school was started in Sulagiri in 2005-2006 with a student strength of 50. At Chinna Bennagur village in Denkanikottai taluk a new building is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh funded by the Union Government. The district administraton has allotted 1.25 acres for the school building. As many as 100 students have been enrolled in Kurparapalli school. The process of identifying land to construct a new building is on. The Union Government is giving Rs. 650 for food and maintenance and Rs. 50 for other expenses of the students. Apart from this, Rs. 50 a month is being deposited in the post office recurring scheme in the name of every girl student. InsuranceThe Government is also providing an insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh for every student. The premium of Rs. 250 a month is being paid by the SSA scheme. The funds received by the schools from the government are spent according to the students’ wishes under the guidance of teachers. They maintain the school store records and plan their daily menu on Saturdays. The minutes are recorded by the students. Street playsKGBV School Coordinator Samson Wesley says the school will be made more attractive to dropouts. Students studying in these schools organise street plays to woo the dropouts.
