PALAKKAD: Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran on Saturday said that social auditing will soon be implemented in the Agriculture sector. Inaugurating a meeting on paddy cultivation in 2,514 hectares of fallow land in the district under the National Food Security Mission at the collectorate conference hall here, the Minister said: “In every scheme implemented by the government in the agriculture sector, social auditing will be done on its beneficiaries, amount spent and the area in which the project was implemented or benefited.” The Minister said that already 806 hectares of fallow land was brought under paddy cultivation in the district in 2008-09 and it would be expanded to 1,708 hectares. A survey would be conducted on this land and suitable schemes prepared. The Minister said that to generate interest in agriculture and solve the shortage of farmhands, selected persons would be given training to create labour groups. The groups would function at the block panchayat level. He said that the agriculture university and Raidco were given the task of providing machines for farm operations. The Centre had allotted Rs.188.85 lakh under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in 2008-09 for the district, he said.
