MALAPPURAM: The Muslim Youth League (MYL) has accused the State government of showing a lack of interest in the Central government’s plan to set up model colleges in 374 educationally backward districts across the country. Malappuram, Palakkad, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts had been noted more educationally backward with lower enrolment ratio than the national average. A meeting of the Youth League held here on Saturday demanded that the State government initiate immediate measures to set up the proposed model colleges in districts including Malappuram. Youth League constituency secretary Kaderi Mujeeb pointed out that the Central government had allotted Rs.8 crore for each college, sparing the State government of any financial obligations. The State government, he said, should allocate the land for the college without any delay. Mr. Mujeeb expressed apprehension that the district might lose the proposed centre of the Aligarh Muslim University owing to the lackadaisical attitude of the government. The Youth League would launch an agitation if the government did not initiate action, he said.
