NCW for probe into police action in Mangalore

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has demanded an inquiry into police action against peaceful demonstrators in Mangalore and adjoining places, and also against the erring policemen.

NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said on Thursday that during her two-day visit to Mangalore, Chikmagalur and Udupi in Karnataka, she found that 19 churches had been attacked in the recent violence.

Ms. Vyas, who presented her report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said policemen had reportedly entered nunneries, churches and chapels while dealing with rioters. Some nuns were also injured. Those responsible for such incidents should be brought to book, she said.
