Centre urged to restore rice quota for A.P.

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Food Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy has urged Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to fix the rice quota for the State from the Central pool at 38,19,444 tonnes for 2008-09 as was done for 2007-08.

The shortfall of 5,37,060 tonnes during 2008-09 due to the reduction in the quota (32,82,384 tonnes) would throw the public distribution system out of gear in the State, he told Mr. Pawar when he met him here on Thursday.

During 2007-08, out of the total allocation of 38,19,444 tonnes, the State had lifted only 34,78,371 tonnes. The reduction of 5,37,060 tonnes in the allotment for 2008-09 was much more than the quantity not lifted in 2007-08, he pointed out to the Minister. Restoration of earlier quota was vital as the government had been supplying rice at Rs. 2 per kg from April 2008 to ensure food and nutritional security.
