NRI nabbed for ‘holiday weddings’

Staff Reporter

CHANDIGARH: The police on Thursday arrested a Germany-based NRI who married at least four times during his holiday trips to Punjab.

Gurdev Singh’s honeymoon ended when his fourth wife, Rajinder Kaur, came to know that he not only had three other wives but was all set to get married a fifth time.

“He was nabbed at Chintpurni (90 km from here) where he was getting married again,” said SHO Gurwinder Singh.

The custom of NRIs coming to Punjab for holiday and getting married is quite common.

According to Lok Bhalai Party, which has been playing a key role in ensuring that Punjabi women don’t get cheated by NRI grooms, there are over 30,000 women in Punjab who have never seen the NRI they married after he went away making false promises.
