Local bodies poll

CHENNAI: About 65.7 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the elections to vacant seats in various local bodies in the State, polling to which were held on Thursday. The percentage of polling was maximum in wards in town panchayats, which recorded 77.57 per cent, followed by municipalities with 70.51 per cent. In Chennai and Madurai corporation wards, the average percentage of voting was 62.46. Wards in third grade municipalities recorded 62.57 per cent while those in rural areas registered 65.36 per cent.

In the Chennai Corporation where elections to two wards were held, 56.18 per cent of voting was recorded. In the Madurai Corporation the percentage of polling was 73.83, according to the State Election Commission. — Special Correspondent
