‘SRI method will improve paddy yield’

Seeking feedback: Transport Secretary Debendranath Sarangi interacting with students of Government Backward Class welfare hostel at Ammapet in Salem

SALEM: The cultivation of paddy under System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has picked up in the State, Transport Secretary and Nodal Officer for Salem district Debendranath Sarangi has said.

After reviewing the progress of various development works in the district on Thursday, he said that farmers had cultivated paddy under SRI method over 14,000 hectares in the district this year.

Over 7.5 lakh hectares in the State was covered under the method.

The adoption of SRI method would improve the productivity in paddy cultivation significantly, he said.

Appreciating the district administration for the successful implementation of several programmes, he called upon the officials to co-ordinate themselves to ensure the benefits of various schemes reach the people.

He asked the officials to make necessary arrangements for the launch of State Government’s scheme aimed at distributing 10 products at Rs. 50 on October 2.

Collector N. Mathivanan presided over the meeting. District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, District Rural Development Agency Project Officer D. Jagannathan, Salem Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy and senior officials were present.

Earlier, Mr. Sarangi visited various places in the district and inspected the execution of development works.

He interacted with students staying in the backward class welfare hostels in Ammapet and instructed the hostel officials to ensure hygienic conditions in the preparation of food.

He also interacted with the members of village poverty reduction committee in Mettupatti Dathanur. He inspected noon-meal centres. Senior officials accompanied him.
