Fredy on song for Loyola again

CHENNAI: Fredy’s goal-scoring prowess has become a feature of the ongoing CFA-S. Nagalingam Nadar memorial inter-collegiate football tournament.

For two successive days this striker has come up with a four-goal spree to help Loyola trounce Sir Theagaraya first and SRM on Wednesday.

The results: Loyola 5 (Fredy 4, Dilip) bt SRM 0; Sathyabama 4 (Senthil, Shabir Ali, Manikandan, Shiju) bt St Joseph’s 1 (Emmanuel); Pachaiyappa’s 4 (Vinoba 2, Karthik, Mansur) bt Sir Theagaraya 0.

Earlier results: Loyola 6 (Fredy 4, Chinniah, Siva) bt Theagaraya 0; Sathyabama drew with Jeppiar 0-0; SRM drew with Pachaiyappa’s 0-0; St Joseph’s 4 (Stanley, Prasath, Emmanuel 2) bt Hindustan University 0.

IOB begins well

Indian Overseas Bank began its programme with a four-set win against SDAT in the Cholamandalam Sports Development Trust (Thanjavur) Velammal Trophy invitation volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Wednesday.

Sivabalan and Naveen were outstanding for the winner.

In the women’s section, defending champion St. Joseph’s College defeated SDAT, thanks to a fine display by Gowri and Vijaylakshmi.

The results:

Men: IOB bt SDAT 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20.

Women: St. Joseph’s College bt SDAT 25-15, 25-17; Dr. Sivanthi Club bt Hindustan Sports Foundation 25-19, 25-20.

Districts in command

An unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 137 in 62.5 overs between M. Bilwaprasad (67 batting, 212b, 5x4) and Kevin Sukumar (66 batting, 193b, 11x4) placed Combined Districts in a strong position on the first day of the under-19 three-day return match against City for the R.T. Parthasarathy Trophy.

The scores: Combined Districts 240 for three in 90 overs (S. Aravindan 42, A.C. Prathiban 27, M. Bilwaprasad 67 batting, Kevin Sukumar 66 batting) vs. City.

Mixed luck for MOP Vaishnav

MOP Vaishnav College pocketed the basketball title, but lost a hard-fought volleyball final to St. Joseph’s in the Kongu Trophy, conducted recently by Kongu Engineering College (Coimbatore).

MOP Vaishnav also triumphed in the inter-divisional cricket tournament held at SDNB Vaishnav College (Chrompet), with M.D. Thirushkamini playing the lead role.

The results: Basketball: MOP Vaishnav bt Kongu EC 53-19; MOP Vaishnav bt SRM University 49-33; MOP Vaishnav bt Vellaar 62-32; MOP Vaishnav bt St. Joseph’s 59-31.

Volleyball: St. Joseph’s bt MOP Vaishnav 28-26, 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 15-7; MOP Vaishnav bt PKR Arts and Science 25-18, 25-15, 25-9; MOP Vaishnav bt SRM University 25-9, 25-18, 25-15.

Inter-divisional cricket tournament: MOP Vaishnav 166 for three (M.D. Thirushkamini 59) bt ‘B’ Zone (Combined Team) 99; MOP Vaishnav 202 for two (M.D. Thirushkamini 113) bt Ethiraj 90; MOP Vaishnav 196 for four (M.D. Thirushkamini 111 n.o.) bt ‘A’ Zone (Combined Team) 124 for five.

Double for Sathyabama

Sathyabama University won both the men’s basketball and volleyball titles in the Collesium 08 State-level inter-Engineering tournament, organised by Sastra University at Thanjavur recently.

In the basketball final, Sathyabama defeated SRM 75-68 and in volleyball, it beat Rajalakshmi Engineering College 24-26, 25-10, 25-14.

Other results:

Basketball: Semifinals: Sathyabama bt SSN 72-65.

Volleyball: Semifinals: Sathyabama bt Sastra 25-10.

Penultimate round of National racing

The fifth and penultimate round of the JK Tyre National racing championship will take place this weekend at the Madras Motor Race Track here.

The endurance race will be held on Saturday and will be followed by one race in the ‘Group A’ super bikes series. The formula car races and ‘Group A’ bike races will commence on Sunday.

While Gaurav Dalal is the current leader in the Formula Rolon class, Vikram Saran heads the Formula LGB Swift class.

Karthick Shankar of Team Rams is the leader in the Formula Hyundai Endurance class.

Each round will have two races with the second race becoming ‘reverse grid’ for the top eight.

Nirmala is chairperson

Dr. K. Nirmala Prasad has been nominated as chairperson of the women’s wing of the Chennai Football Association for the period 2008-09.

Gopi takes title

Gopi, with a gross score of 147, won the Madras Open golf tournament at the Cosmo-TNGF course here recently. P. Murugan (149) finished second.

In the handicap category Division I, S. Ramamirtham (12) with a nett score of 149 and Selvadurai (0) with 151 finished first and second respectively. In Division II, A. Ganesan (20) with 137 points and C. Chandrasekar (17) 143 came first and second.

Volleyball trials

The selection trials for the Chennai district sub-junior (boys and girls) volleyball team will be held at SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on September 21 (7 a.m.).

Players born on or after 1.1.1990 for boys and 1.1.1991 for girls are eligible.

The team will participate in the inter-district championship to be held at Tirupur from October 1 to 4 from which players will be selected for the State team for the Nationals.
