Cabinet discusses security

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: A special Cabinet meeting on Wednesday night saw Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil presenting a concept paper on terrorism, internal security and plans to tackle the newly emerging “metro terrorism.”

The meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was convened to discuss the situation in the aftermath of the recent serial bomb blasts in the country, including the Saturday explosions here.

The concept paper also dealt with plans to strengthen and streamline the intelligence apparatus, strike better coordination between the Centre and the States and pump in more funds to modernise the police forces.

Informed sources said that Mr. Patil made a number of proposals and suggestions on tackling terror.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the Cabinet accepted the proposals.

Though the Cabinet meeting was called after Railway Minister Lalu Prasad made an open demand for such a meeting, he did not attend the meeting.

The Cabinet also considered suggestions to strengthen the laws to deal sternly with terror and heard views on the need to have a comprehensive, tough anti-terror law, a recommendation made by the Second Administrative Reforms Commission.
