Mumbai: Shashank Manohar is all set to succeed Sharad Pawar as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on September 27. A senior advocate from Nagpur, President of the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) and presently BCCI Vice-President from Central Zone, Mr. Manohar was chosen President-elect for a three-year term (2008-2011) at the BCCI’s 2006-07 AGM in Mumbai. The BCCI’s 79th AGM is to be held at the Cricket Centre on September 27 and 28. N. Srinivasan (President, TNCA) stands a “bright chance” of being elected secretary. He had opted out of the FICCI President’s post early this year and has addressed most of the press conferences after BCCI’s working committee meetings and AGMs because of his expertise in administration, financial matters and skills to articulate. If elected, Mr. Srinivasan would be the secretary second from Tamil Nadu, after S. Sriraman (1965-66 to 69-70). Punjab Cricket Association’s Mohinder Pandove is likely to be elected treasurer. Madhya Pradesh’s Sanjay Jagdale and present selector has been offered the joint secretary’s post and reliable sources confirmed he has accepted the offer. A constitutional amendment last year stipulated a maximum three-year term for the President and the principal office-bearers of the BCCI. Sharad Pawar (President), Niranjan Shah (Secretary), Pandove (Jt. Secretary) and Srinivasan have completed their three-year terms. In effect the amended by-laws of the BCCI eliminated the election part of the AGM for two years for the principal office-bearers once they are elected. Mr. Manohar’s successor from South Zone will be known at the BCCI AGM of 2010. The candidate for President-elect has to meet the criteria of having been a past/present office-bearer of the BCCI or attended two AGMs.
