News Analysis
>>The caption of the accompanying PTI photograph in a report “NCDEX plans to introduce electricity trading by Oct.” (“Business page”, September 14, 2008) was “… R. Ramaseshan (left), Managing Director and CEO, NCDEX, with U. Kaushik, Chief Business Officer, interacting with the media in Kolkata on Saturday”, while the first paragraph referred to Mr. Ramaseshan as Chairman. The detail in the caption is right. The fifth paragraph, in this report, was “The other shareholders include Punjab and National Bank and Canara Bank.” It should have been Punjab National Bank. The sixth paragraph was “He said that within three days of launching coal futures, the exchange was handling about 800 tonnes of coal daily and it was targeting to increase this figure to 100 million tonnes annually within the next 12 months ….” The figure 800 tonnes is the trading volume that has been attained since the launch of coal futures last week. The figure 100 million tonnes is the trading volume that is being targeted by September 2009. Actual physical delivery may be only eight million tonnes or even less. Trading volume is normally a multiple (in this case 12) of the actual underlying size of the commodity. >>The strapline of the lead report titled “Vital clues gathered, say Delhi police” (Some early editions, September 15, 2008, page 1) was “They suspect Sunday’s blasts were masterminded by the group behind the Ahmedabad blasts”. It should have been “Saturday’s blasts”, an error that was rectified in the later editions. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
